Recognize the signs

Knowledge is your first line of defense.

Knowledge helps you recognize the signs of workplace bullying, respond strategically, and rebuild your confidence.

Are you experiencing Workplace Bullying?

Workplace bullying is rarely defined by a single event. More often, it develops through a pattern of behaviors that create confusion, undermine confidence, and make it increasingly difficult to succeed.

One difficult conversation with a co-worker or person in authority does not necessarily mean you are being bullied. An occasional disagreement with a coworker or supervisor is a normal part of professional life. The key question is whether you are experiencing a persistent pattern that leaves you feeling isolated, uncertain, and unfairly targeted.

If several of the following signs describe your experience over time, it may be worth taking a closer look at your workplace environment.

Common Signs of Workplace Bullying

01

You constantly question your own judgment, wondering if you're overreacting even though the same issues continue to occur.

02

Expectations change without explanation, making success feel like a moving target.

03

You are treated differently than others in similar situations without a clear or legitimate reason.

04

Important information, resources, or opportunities are selectively withheld from you.

05

Your accomplishments receive little recognition while your mistakes receive disproportionate attention.

06

You begin to feel isolated from coworkers, conversations, meetings, or important decisions.

07

Small incidents accumulate into a consistent pattern that leaves you feeling discouraged or disadvantaged.

08

You are encouraged to doubt your own memory or perception of events.

09

You experience ongoing uncertainty about where you stand, what is expected, or whether your work will suddenly be criticized.

10

You spend more energy managing personalities and avoiding conflict than performing the work you were hired to do.

11

Your confidence gradually declines, even though your abilities and work ethic have not changed.

12

Others begin treating you according to a negative narrative that seems to have developed without your knowledge.

13

You find yourself carefully documenting conversations and decisions because your version of events is frequently challenged or dismissed.

14

The behaviors targeting you are repeated over weeks or months rather than being an isolated disagreement or incident.

The Pattern Matters

Some of these experiences may occur occasionally in an otherwise healthy workplace. What distinguishes bullying is not just a single  incident, but a combination and cumulative effect of these behaviors and events.

Over time, these patterns lead capable, conscientious people to question their judgment, withdraw from colleagues, underperform their duties and lose confidence in their own abilities.
